about

a song about "sutee", an indian tradition that called for wives of deceased husbands to be burned alive on their husband's funeral pyres... I visited a small temple in the Rajastani desert that had dozens of small red faded handprints of young brides who had been burned over the centuries...

lyrics

If thoughts are just empty castles
then mine of you are filled with ghosts,
they haunt my every sleeping hour,
I wake at dawn dazed and alone.
He cries in the halls never grow dim,
the temples reach out and call my name.

We dip our hands in blood red paint
and leave our prints up on the walls;
these sketches are just ghostly relics,
the marks we leave become our souls.
The hands on the wall never grow dim,
they reach out in vain and call my name…

I die for you!
I burn for you!
I climb the steps onto the fire
to be with you,
die with you-
only you.

Our final walk is one of fear,
my duty calls yet seems insane;
to feel so old and die so young
is to cheat a life not yet begun.
The hands on the wall never grow old,
they reach out in pain and call my name,
they call my name…

I die for you,
I burn for you,
I climb the steps onto the pyre
to be with you!
I die for you,
I burn with you,
I follow you into the fire
to die with you!

But the hands on the wall,
they reach out to me,
I close my eyes and in my sleep
the only thing I see,
the only thing I see

are The Hands.
