Strange Bedfellows (chapt. 20)

from Kiwi's Songs by Lawrence Collins

/

about

This song is based on a poem I wrote back in 1992. It talks about my profound belief that our differences can only make us stronger; we learn from each other, the bigger the difference, the more profound the learning experience.

Une chanson basée sur un poem que j'ai écrit en 1992. Elle parle du fait que je crois profondément que nos différences, et celles des autres, ne peuvent que nous rendre plus fort et sublimer notre existence.

lyrics

This life is so fragile
like a crystal ball
in the hands of a child,
it trembles and it shimmers
with the doubt and the knowledge
the boy carries
inside.
Now the boy gazes through the glass
at a map beneath the covers
of his bed late at night,
and from this soft sheltered place
the world seems so big,
the multicolored lands
reach out to him and sing:

What about me? (I believe the true path lies in one’s own heart…)
What about me? (I believe the true path…)
What about me? (I believe the true path lies in one’s own heart…)
Do I count at all?

Over the lands
and on the oceans
his eyes, with age, can travel far.
But the dreams of the child
have paved the way
for his mind to blossom.
With language and curiosity
he learns of warmth in compassion,
of strength in tolerance,
of power in knowledge
that most men yearn
for the same peace…

What about me? (I believe the true path lies in one’s own heart…)
What about me? (I believe the true path…)
What about me? (I believe the true path lies in one’s own heart…)
Do I count at all?

Tell me, teach me, who is your God?
I could learn more about my own-
maybe I could find my way home.
Tell me, teach me, who is you God?
I could learn more about my own-
maybe you will help me to find,
help me to find my way home…

At the end of the day
we can lie down side by side,
strange bedfellows, perhaps,
but comforted by each other’s warmth,
and, as our eyes close,
a touch in the dark reminds us
that maybe all the world isn’t quite so big
quite so big as we thought
after all…

What about me? (I believe the true path lies in one’s own heart…)
What about me? (I believe the true path…)
What about me? (I believe the true path lies in one’s own heart…)
Do I count at all?
(What about you?
What about you?
What about you?
Have you seen it all?)
